Our partners are critical in supporting the Academy’s mission. We work across multiple sectors and with a variety of partners to protect the health and wellbeing of newborns, children, adolescents, and young adults globally. We seek mission-driven partnerships focused on bidirectional learning and shared values.
The AAP is globally recognized and active in 30 countries. As a grantee, grantor, volunteer, trainer, and technical expert, our partnerships take many forms. A few of our active collaborations are described below. To explore partnership opportunities with the AAP, please contact aapglobal@aap.org.
Supporting USAID with Technical Assistance
As a technical partner in the USAID ACCESS project in Madagascar, the AAP provides technical assistance and capacity building to ACCESS clinical staff. Partnering with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology and the American College of Nurse Midwives, the AAP supports the maternal, newborn, and child health agenda for the project through telementoring and short-term technical assistance paired with targeted technical assistance when appropriate.
Activating National Pediatric Societies for Immunization Systems Strengthening
Working with the US Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, the AAP supports 11 national pediatric societies to strengthen immunizations systems in their own countries. With a focus on sustainable capacity building, AAP worked with both the Paediatric Association of Nigeria and the Indonesian Pediatric Society to establish sustainable regional learning collaboratives for immunizations, bringing together national pediatric societies across each region – Africa and Asia. Together through these partnerships, pediatric societies are making real change in improving immunization access for children through training health workers, influencing Ministries of Health, and educating communities on the benefits of vaccines.
Progressing the Field of Neonatal Resuscitation and Simulation Training
In collaboration with Laerdal Global Health, which develops innovative training tools and solutions to complement the Helping Babies Survive (HBS) initiative, the AAP and its implementing partners seek to build the capacity of health care workers in resource-limited settings by ensuring they have the necessary skills and competencies to provide high-quality, life-saving care to newborns. As a result of this enduring partnership, HBS training programs have been taught to over 850,000 providers in 80+ countries.
Championing Health Sector Leadership in Early Childhood Development
In partnership with the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the AAP, Kenya Paediatric Association, and Paediatric Association of Tanzania seek to leverage the clinical expertise, patient experience, and expansive networks of pediatricians to ensure national and sub-national health care systems are responsive and inclusive of early childhood development and nurturing care.
Tailoring Curricula for Specific Contexts and Settings
As an implementing partner with UNICEF, the AAP has organized telementoring sessions in three target countries (Kenya, Pakistan and Tanzania) which focus on essential newborn care. AAP staff traveled in country with member experts to perform rapid assessment to determine educational needs to collaboratively develop individual curricula tailored to the needs of each site.
Adapting Evidence-Based Resources for a Global Audience
Based on the success of the Helping Babies Survive curricula, the AAP is collaborating with WHO on an adaptation of these resources to form a new Essential Newborn Care curriculum that will be WHO-owned. The AAP has continued to provide content and implementation expertise in the adaptation of these materials, in addition to the development of other auxiliary materials that will support facilitation and dissemination of the curriculum.
